BIG CHANGES IN THE 2008-2009 HANDBOOK- A special notice to both the
parents and students regarding a major change in the student handbook.
Students will not be allowed to have cell phones, MP3 players, Ipods, or
any other electronic devices in the school building next year. The reason
for this policy change is that students have not followed the rule of
leaving their cell phones in their lockers, and not bringing electronic
devices to school, during this school year. Students are using their cell
phones to text during the day, and have been caught in the restroom making
cell phone calls without permission. We have also had several MP3 players,
CD players, and Ipods get stolen this year. These issues have caused a lot
of problems this year.

If high school students bring these devices to school they will be
expected to leave them in their cars. Jr. high and elementary students
will need to check their cell phones into the high school office during
the day. However, they may not be used. Students needing to make a
telephone call may use the phone in the high school office. Also, if
parents need to contact their children we ask that you call Judy Tyma and
leave a message with her. The student will be given the message and then
will be allowed to call their parents back during their study hall. We
also ask that you do not call and speak to your child during class as this
is very disruptive to the learning environment. Eletronic devices found in
the school building will be confiscated and the student will be required
to serve a detention for having it at school.

LHS Junior-Senior Prom

The LHS Junior-Senior Prom will be held on Saturday, April 26th in the New
Gym.  The activities are scheduled to begin at 6 PM. Prom photographs
(individual, couples, and classes) are scheduled to be taken in the Old
Gym at 7:30 PM by Farris Photography.Crowning of the Prom Royalty will take
place at 9 PM. This is a special night for the juniors and seniors and
keeping that in mind, parents are asked to leave after the crowning of the
King and Queen and royalty pictures are taken. The Prom dance will be held
after the crowning of the royalty and the dance will end at 11:30 so the
students may attend the Post Prom activities at the Big Apple in Kearney.

Tig Welder

Litchfield Public Schools has a new Tig welder that is down in the shop. We have had the Tig welder for about 2 months. You can weld aluminum and steel with the Tig welder. It's a new experience welding aluminum because it melts very fast so it makes it harder to weld. Welding steel with it is just like using the Oxy Acetylene and with the Tig welder you can also arc weld. Logan Snow and Nathan Pickering have been using it weld the aluminum electric car frame for the Power Drive races.

FBLA TO ATTEND STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Fourteen members of FBLA will attend State Leadership Conference in Omaha on April 3-5.  While at the conference, members will compete in various business competitions, attend seminars and general sessions, and elect state officers.  FBLA members have been busy completing study hours in preparation for the contests.  Testing for computer events has been done at school and submitted for judging prior to the conference.  Members Iris Woolery, Missy Bucher, and Abby Chamberlin wrote an American Enterprise Day report which outlined their project with the elementary on American Enterprise Day.  It has been pre-judged and the chapter has been notified that this report is in the top five of all chapters submitting a report.  This has qualified them for the oral presentation part of the competition. Congratulations to them!   Good Luck to all FBLA members!!

BUILD A COMPUTER DAY

TECHS students Brandon Siegel, Kendel Kusek, and Brett Kramer, along with Mrs. Kathy Dobesh, attended Build-a-Computer Day at ESU10 on February 12.  The students, under the direction of ESU personnel, built a computer and installed an operating system on it.  Students also learned applications for the computer they had built, as well as new technical applications.   They are currently using this computer in class.  On April 30, they will be at ESU10 demonstrating their uses of this computer.

UNK MENTORS

The TECHS class has had the opportunity to have mentors from the University of Nebraska-Kearney.  These upper level computer students, Rex Bauer and Uriah Pearson,  were assigned to the Litchfield TECHS through the UNK¢â¡Ás Technology Management Department.  The mentors assisted Litchfield students at Build-A-Computer Day.  They also visited the TECHS class on March 19 and presented a lesson on networking concepts.  They are available to students to help with technical and career advice.

Austin Nielsen

Austin transferred to Litchfield High in 2007 his senior year.  When he was little he wanted to be a mechanic and loved tearing up things.  He now enjoys working on cars, shooting, and hanging out with his friends.  Welding class has been his favorite class period, along with Mr. Bohling as his favorite teacher.  He will always remember the great times he had in weights class with Mr. Bohling.  Austin has yet to decide where he will be attending college at this time.  In ten years he sees himself working at a body shop doing mechanic work and body work.  His favorite memory coming here to Litchfield was the first day he attended and everyone came up to him asking "What are you doing here?".

School Bus Buddy
Dee Dee Howard reported that the story printed in a local newspaper entitled, "School Bus Buddy" was published in the "Happiness magazine, Feb.23-29 issue. Reduced the Risk of getting MRSA Infections:

1. Encourage students to clean their hands frequently.

2. Parents, tuck a small container of hand sanitizer in your child's book bag, if your child is mature enough to use it properly.

3. Educators, ensure that all shared sports equipment (Wrestling mats, baseball gloves, gymnastics equipment...) and locker room facilities such as benches are cleaned with detergents, which must remain on the surfaces for at least three minutes. Quick spraying wiping is not effective.

4. School authorities should periodically have surfaces in the gym and classrooms cultured, to know the extent of MRSA contamination.

5.  Warn students not to share gym clothes, towels, and other personal items. MRSA bacteria can live on fabrics and hard surfaces for up to ninety days.

6. Educators, install dispensers of hand-sanitizers inside each classroom. Students should not have to get a pass and leave the classroom to clean their hands.

7. Warn students against sharing bars of soap. Use pump dispensers only.

8. Educators, make sure that when a student gets a cut or abrasion on the playground or in class, it is cleaned immediately by someone whose hands are clean. Classrooms should have a first-aid kit or ready access to the help of a school nurse.

9. School authorities should investigate anti-microbial coatings available for use on sports equipment and other surfaces, and washable key boards for computers.

10. Athletes, gym teachers, and coaches are at higher risk of exposure to MRSA. In high contact sports, MRSA screening may be advisable.
