Teacher Exchange

The Korean National Teachers Exchange Program is looking to place a young teacher in the Litchfield Public Schools District this spring. The teacher's name is Ms. Lee, she is a 23 year old college student who is earning a degree in elementary education. The purpose of this program is to give teachers from Korea the opportunity to learn more about the United States and its educational system, by teaching in an American school. Ms. Lee will need a host family to stay with for the months of April and May. While she is here Litchfield Public Schools would allow her to work in various elementary classrooms and in our music program. If you are interested in opening your home to Ms. Lee please contact Mr. Stithem at 308-446-2244 for further information about this exciting opportunity.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS

On Thursday February 7, 2008 Mrs. Kaskie took the fourth graders to ESU10 in Kearney. We took the blue school van. The girls and Jake were singing along to country music. When we got there, there were other schools. The schools were Franklin Public School, Ord Public Schools, Elm Creek Public schools, Sandhills Public School, and Ravenna Public School. Everyone had to split up according to their birthdays. We learned about the 5 R's Respect, respect means that you need to respect other people's property and respect the people around you. The second R is Refuse, refuse is not participating in bully action and you aren't going to join the bully in hurting the target. This third R is Responsibility is being you. The fourth R is Recognize is to know what the bully is doing, who the bully is and who the victim is. The fifth R is Report, report   means that if you are watching someone be bullied you need to secretly tell an adult. We also decorated white hats. We put the five R's on the hat. The coolest thing that happened was the drama team; Nick, Brandon, and Ashley were the actors and actresses. They did a terrific job. Nick was the bully and Ashley and Brandon were the victims. The fourth grades are glad we learned the 5 R's they are Respect, Recognized, Refuse, Responsibility, and Report.

Justine's opinion was it was very cool and she wants to go again sometime. She learned not to be a bully. Ariel's opinion was it was fun.  Breiann's opinion was it was awesome and it was good for bullying and how to respect people's opinion.  Madea's opinion was that it was terrific. The next ESU10 meeting Madea wants to have it about the enviorment.  Michaela learned how to deal with bullies. Jake's opinion was it was a blast. Camryn's opinion was it was a good class to learn about bully prevention. Our Food Chain. Libbi's opinion was it was a lot of fun and it helps you learn a lot. The next one should be about agricultural, kids, and other animals they got the opportunity to go to ESU10.

Janine came to Litchfield Public school her 3rd and 4th grade year. She left her 4th grade year and came back to Litchfield Public School in her 7th grade year. Janine is planning to go to Hastings or UNK, she is going to major in English. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Vap. Her favorite memory had to do with the schools fish sandwiches. What she is going to miss about the school is all the annoying guys that she claims to not be able to stand . Janine said the thing that is going to be different about college from Litchfield would be the classes are bigger. In 5 to 10 years she sees herself living somewhere warm and with an ocean.

Kassy Warta
Kassy has been going to Litchfield Public School since her sophomore year.  She wanted to be a veterinarian when she was a little girl, but now she is going to Hastings College to major in graphic design and minor in photography.  While she has attended Litchfield High she has enjoyed volleyball and track for after school sports, having Mrs. Winberg as her favorite teacher, and another of her favorites is Calculus class.  Kassyâ≈ s hobbies are running and reading.  In the next ten years she sees her self working at a job.  When leaving Litchfield High she will miss everyone and will always remember the pranks.

Power Drive Car
Litchfield Schools is at it again. The Automotive and Welding classes are participating in the Power Drive Competition again this year. The members or our 2008 Power Drive team are seniors Trevor Kohls, Andrew Kittoe, Brett Kramer, Kendel Kusek, Nathan Pickering, Tyson Sekutera, Logan Snow, Austin Nielson, and Abby Chamberlin. The juniors include Eric Panowicz, Blake Siegel, Andrew Reynolds, and Melissa Bucher. We have two sophomores helping us and they are Jason Lichenberger and David Brandt. If you've never heard about the Power Drive Competition here's a brief overview. Each year Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) holds a Power Drive Competition for local area schools. Each school builds an electric car based on the Power Drive qualifications. You then participate in several events at the competition. This year we are planning to register our car we built last year into the Advanced Class. We are also working on building a new car to register into the Standard Class. We spend most of our class time learning about electrical systems and battery systems. This helps us to understand the principals behind the car. We also spend class time building the car. We are excited to attend the Power Drive Competitions across the state.

HOBY Leadership Conference

Jacob Gaspari will be representing Litchfield Public Schools at the annual Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Conference held June 2008 in Lincoln.  The conference brings together outstanding student leaders from all over Nebraska.  The program includes panel discussions on the topics of education, media, volunteerism, entrepreneurship, government, diversity, and more.  HOBY seminars are designed to enhance students' leadership, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making abilities, as well as to provide the skills needed to be of service to others.  Jacob has demonstrated leadership and commitment to volunteerism through his involvement with the Sherman County Prevention Policy Board and Mission Trips to Louisiana.  At school, he participates in FBLA, TADA, 4-H, Speech Team, and Choir.  Should Jacob be unable to attend the conference, the alternate HOBY representative is Jacob Kramer.

FBLA

By Kassy Warta

The FBLA has just finished their annual March of Dimes. They also took a week to get into the March of Dimes, with fun days. Days like pop tart day and jean day (for the teachers) and hat day. The students or teachers would buy a pass to eat or wear certain things that day. Also Business Day was Tuesday the 10th of February. SLC is also coming soon. It is on April 3rd to the 5th.  It will be held at the Omaha Holiday Inn. Fifteen members will be going to SLC this year. At SLC students will take competitive tests over business subjects. Another function of SLC is to elect state officers and there will be informational seminars.   Talking to the president, Brandon Siegel, I found out what some of what students would be doing. There are many categories. Some that Brandon would be participating in is a job interview, computer problem solving, and cyber security and tech concepts. There are many more though. Each student that  goes participates in six events.  When asked if SLC was fun, Brandon replied, "It's a lot of hard work, but it is also a lot of fun

 Hoops For Heart

The students in grades 3-6 participated in the "Hoops for Hearts" program raised over $1,000 in donations for the American Heart Association. We thank the people of the community for supporting this worthwhile project.

LVC Art Awards

LVC Art Awards were held this month on the 2nd, during the basketball tournament. The show was well attended. The winners from the Litchfield High School are: Janine Woolery 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Pencil and 1st in Colored Pencil, Hope Downer 5th in Black and White Honorble Mention in Print Making, Hillary Rachow 3rd in Print Making, Alena Volbach 4th in Print Making, and Brittany Sweley 5th in Theme Catagory.  The Litchfield Junior High students also received ribbons in the Watercolor category: Alura Herrick 5th, Sydney Preston and Taylor Pickar both received an honorable mention.

Employee of the Month

The Employee of the Month is Mrs. Erma Sadler. Over the years Mrs. Sadler continues to do a good job with both our Title I and Special Education programs. She has always been a wonderful resource for our school and her students. Mrs. Sadler has covered a lot classes for Mr. Stithem, she helps Judy Tyma to sack the Naier orders each month, and volunteers to work in the concession stand during the basketball and football seasons. We appreciate her willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Student of the Month

The Student of the Month goes out to Ms. Iris Woolery.  Have you ever known a student that loves to assist others? Well, Iris is one of those rare individuals. We also appreciate her willingness to run the scorebook during the JV and varsity basketball teams. This is not an easy job and Iris was always very thorough in this endeavor. Thank you for helping us all out!

CAMPBELL'S CONTEST WINNERS

We have just completed a contest in the elementary classrooms to see who could collect the most labels from participating Campbell's products.  The Grand Prize winners were Madison and Sydney Kucera, who turned in certificates worth 3,200 bonus points.  Other winners included: Rebecca Mostek (Pre-K), Braydon Goodner (K), John Zimmer (Grade 1), Meghan Kratzer (Grade 2), Rachel Snow (Grade 3), Justine Pickar (Grade 4), Kayla Reynolds (Grade 5), and Deshia Kramer (Grade 6).  Prizes were Campbell's products, which were furnished by the Campbell Soup Company.  A total of 512 labels were collected; some were worth 5-points each.  In addition, many bonus certificates were turned in, along with the required cash register receipts.  We recently "banked" 10,950 points into our school's account.  Please continue to save UPC's from Campbell's products; you may leave them in the special box at Max's Marker or bring/send them to school.  Thank you for supporting this program, which earns free educational resources for our school!

BOX TOPS UPDATE

Another submission deadline has come and gone, with tremendous results for our school!  Because of your continued support of this program, we have been able to collect 2,320 Box Tops from General Mills products since November 1, 2007.  This means that our school will receive $232 from General Mills during the month of April.  In January, we received a check for $334.40; that amount was for the Box Tops we had collected between March and November, 2007.  As you can see, this is another beneficial program for our school.  The funds have not been designated for a specific project at this time; however, the students are suggesting additional playground equipment be purchased.  They are enjoying the new merry-go-round that was partially funded with "Box Tops money" last year.  Thank you for saving Box Tops for us!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

John Borland was a graduate from the class of 1994, to those who know him he is called Little John.  Three years after he graduated from Litchfield he went into the Army.  He has done 2 tours in Iraq, and is gearing up to do this third tour in Iraq in June.  He is now a 19 K Tanker for the Army, and his rank is an E 6 Staff Guard.  John likes the Army a lot, he is what the Army calls a "Lifer" which means he has made the Army his career.  John is stationed at Ft. Hood in Texas with his wife and family.  This means he doesn't get to see his parents, John & Judy Bourland, in Litchfield very much. John loves the fishing there in Texas, which can be done year round - thanks to the warm weather.  His hobby is working with motors and he enjoys racing go-carts with his oldest son and spending the weekend with the kids.

Meet the ESU 10 Special Education Staff
My name is Marcy Stevens, and I am one of the Speech-Language Pathologist
providing service to the Litchfield and Greeley-Wolbach school districts.
I am certified to see students birth through grade twelve. That statement
is especially true this year as I have a group of seniors, as well as a
small infant, only a few months old on my caseload. The variety in the
students I serve is one on the things I love about being an
Speech-Language Pathologist for ESU10.
My husband and I are both original Kearney-ites and have lived here all of
our lives. We have 4 children, two girls and two boys, ranging in age from
22-10.
